📣 PUBLICATION — FG Okays 15 Federal Colleges To Run Degree Programmes
Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Universities Commission (NUC), has given formal approval for 15 Federal Colleges of Education to independently run Bachelor’s degree programmes, marking a major milestone in the nation’s education sector. (Naija News)
This directive is part of the implementation of the Dual Mandate Policy, which empowers Federal Colleges of Education to award both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education without the need for university affiliation. The policy was established under the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023, and signed into law as a cornerstone of teacher education reforms in Nigeria. (FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION)
At a press briefing in Yola, Adamawa State, the Provost of Federal College of Education (FCE), Yola, Dr. Mohammed Dagereji, revealed that FCE Yola was among the 15 colleges mandated by the federal government to launch independent degree programmes. The approval will enable FCE Yola to run 14 degree courses out of 38 programmes previously accredited, starting from the 2026/2027 academic session — a transition from its former affiliation with the University of Maiduguri. Dr. Dagereji emphasized the historic nature of this development, noting that it opens a new chapter in teacher education by broadening access to higher education and improving the quality of training for educators. He encouraged prospective students to apply through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal, reminding applicants to select the approved degree programmes to ensure successful admission. The Dual Mandate Policy is designed to address several long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s education landscape, including declining enrolment, the need for higher professional teaching standards, and over-dependence on university affiliations for degree offerings. By granting autonomy to Colleges of Education, the federal government intends to increase access, enhance quality, and modernize teacher training nationwide. (FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION)
This significant policy shift has been welcomed by education stakeholders, who see it as a bold step towards revitalizing teacher education and strengthening the overall tertiary education framework in Nigeria. (ncce.gov.ng)
