FG INAUGURATES WORLDSKILLS NIGERIA COMMITTEE, TO DRIVE SKILLS-BASED EDUCATION AND GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS
The Federal Government has inaugurated the WorldSkills Nigeria National Team Committee, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s renewed commitment to skills development, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), youth empowerment and global competitiveness.
Inaugurating the Committee in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, described the event as a historic turning point following Nigeria’s admission into WorldSkills International as its 89th member after more than a decade of sustained engagement.
Dr. Alausa emphasised that excessive focus on white-collar education has contributed to unemployment and skills mismatch, stressing that nations with sustainable growth prioritise skills, manufacturing and infrastructure. He noted that the Federal Government has repositioned skills development as a core pillar of national growth, elevating TVET as a first-choice pathway for Nigerian youths.
He explained that Nigeria’s WorldSkills membership, achieved in 2024, reflects years of collaboration among NBTE, TVET institutions, industry partners and key stakeholders. According to him, WorldSkills Nigeria represents a national commitment to excellence, global benchmarking and workforce readiness, enabling youths to acquire world-class skills while boosting productivity, innovation and economic growth.
The 15-member Committee is chaired by the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed Said, with the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Muhammad Bugaje, as Vice Chairman. The Federal Government reaffirmed full institutional support for WorldSkills Nigeria as a flagship programme for youth empowerment and industrial development.
