Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Opens Social Impact Funding Opportunity of Up to US$300,000

Funding opportunity targets early-stage social enterprises developing scalable solutions for underserved communities

The Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation (DRK) is accepting applications from social entrepreneurs and early-stage organisations developing innovative solutions to major social and environmental challenges.

Unlike scholarship programmes designed for individual students, the DRK opportunity is primarily intended for social-impact organisations and ventures that have already developed and tested their solutions and can demonstrate evidence of impact.

According to the Foundation's current funding information, applications are accepted year-round, meaning there is no fixed annual application deadline. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

Up to US$300,000 in capital

DRK provides up to US$300,000 over a three-year period. Depending on the organisation and the structure agreed with DRK, the support can be provided as unrestricted grant funding or investment capital, generally in multiple tranches. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

The Foundation also provides significant non-financial support. Its model includes intensive organisational and technical assistance, including leadership development, fundraising capacity, financial sustainability and scaling strategy.

DRK estimates that its capacity-building support can represent up to US$500,000 in in-kind support over the engagement period. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

Who is the funding for?

The programme is designed for early-stage social enterprises and organisations addressing urgent social or environmental problems, particularly those serving underserved or vulnerable populations.

DRK says it typically looks for organisations that are:

  • Post-pilot and pre-scale

  • Already operating in the field or market

  • Able to demonstrate early evidence of impact

  • Developing an innovative and scalable solution

  • Led by founders or leadership teams with a strong understanding of the problem

  • Focused on underserved communities

  • Capable of developing sustainable models for long-term growth

DRK typically supports organisations that are around two to five years old, although decisions are made on a case-by-case basis. The Foundation generally does not fund organisations that are more than 10 years old. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

African organisations can apply

The opportunity is relevant to organisations operating in Africa, as well as selected other regions including Europe, India and the United States.

This means eligible Nigerian social enterprises can potentially be considered, provided they meet DRK's funding criteria and demonstrate measurable impact among underserved communities. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

What areas can qualify?

DRK's approach is broad and focuses primarily on the social problem being addressed and the potential for measurable impact, rather than simply funding a particular industry.

Potentially relevant areas can include:

Education and EdTech
Healthcare
Economic empowerment
Digital inclusion
Employment and livelihoods
Environmental solutions
Technology for underserved communities
Financial inclusion
Community development

The Foundation's current portfolio includes organisations working across different social-impact areas and regions. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

What DRK looks for

Applicants are expected to clearly explain the problem they are addressing, their solution, evidence of impact and plans for scaling.

The application asks organisations to provide information covering:

  • The social problem

  • The proposed solution

  • Evidence of impact

  • The underserved population being supported

  • What makes the approach different

  • Results achieved so far

  • Plans for scaling

  • Sources of earned income and financial sustainability

  • Information about the leadership team

Applicants can submit an existing executive summary, pitch deck or business plan addressing these areas. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

Not an idea-stage grant

One important point for entrepreneurs is that DRK does not normally fund projects that are still only at the idea or pre-pilot stage.

The Foundation states that applicants should generally have a product, programme or service that is already being used and should have early evidence that the solution is achieving its intended impact. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

This makes the opportunity more suitable for an established social-impact venture than for an individual student looking for educational funding.

No fixed application deadline

Unlike many grant competitions, DRK accepts applications throughout the year.

The Foundation states that the initial application process takes approximately 30–60 minutes, while its overall review process can take several months because of interviews and detailed due diligence. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

DRK also states that it reviews thousands of applications annually but funds only a limited number of organisations, making evidence of impact, leadership strength and scalability particularly important. (Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation)

Opportunity for Nigerian social entrepreneurs

For Nigerian organisations developing solutions to challenges affecting underserved communities, the DRK Foundation opportunity could provide more than financial capital.

Successful organisations receive access to a network and hands-on support intended to help them strengthen their operations, leadership, fundraising, financial sustainability and ability to scale.

For a Nigerian social enterprise that has already tested its solution and can demonstrate measurable results, this could represent an opportunity to move from an early successful model toward wider national or international impact.

Hybridteckblog Funding Watch

The Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Social Impact Funding Programme is currently accepting applications year-round.

Support: Grant funding or investment capital, plus capacity-building support
Geographic relevance: Africa, including eligible organisations in Nigeria
