Are you running a small business in Nigeria and looking for funding to expand your operations, purchase materials, acquire equipment or strengthen your working capital?

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Bank of Industry (BOI), has established a ₦75 billion MSME Intervention Programme designed to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises across Nigeria.

Unlike a grant, this programme provides loans that must be repaid. According to the official FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal, eligible businesses can access up to ₦1 million, with an interest rate of 9% per annum (all-inclusive) and a repayment period of three years. Repayment begins three months after disbursement. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to registered businesses in Nigeria, including:

  • Sole proprietorships

  • Partnerships

  • Enterprises

  • Limited Liability Companies

Both start-ups and existing businesses can apply, provided they meet the programme requirements. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

This creates an opportunity for businesses in sectors such as manufacturing, fashion, agriculture, technology, food processing, retail, services, repairs, leatherwork, education and other legitimate commercial activities.

What Can the Loan Be Used For?

According to the official portal, the loan can be used for business operations. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

For an entrepreneur, this could mean financing legitimate business needs such as:

  • Working capital

  • Business materials and inventory

  • Equipment

  • Production activities

  • Operational expenses

  • Business expansion

Applicants should ensure that their proposed use of funds is consistent with the programme requirements.

How to Apply

The application is made through the official FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal.

Step 1 — Prepare Your CAC Documents

Your business must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

The BOI portal states that applications must be made using the CAC documents belonging to the registered business. You cannot use another person's business registration documents to apply. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Step 2 — Prepare Your Business Information

Existing businesses should be prepared to provide:

  • CAC registration documents

  • Basic bookkeeping/business records

  • Other information requested by BOI

Start-ups are also required to provide their CAC registration documents and other information that may be requested. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Step 3 — Visit the Official Portal

Go directly to the official FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal:

FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal — Apply Here

Step 4 — Register/Login and Begin Your Application

Follow the instructions on the portal to create or access your application and provide the requested business information.

The portal allows applicants to choose whether their applications are processed through BOI or participating Partner Financial Institutions (PFIs). (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Step 5 — Provide the Required Documentation

The official FAQ indicates that applicants may be required to provide documents including:

  • Passport photographs

  • BVN

  • Valid means of identification

  • Executed Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mandate

  • Relevant guarantor documentation

  • Additional documents requested during processing

The exact requirements can depend on the processing channel and applicant type. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Step 6 — Monitor Your Application

After submitting your application, applicants can use the official portal to check their application status. BOI also indicates that periodic updates may be sent by email. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

What About Collateral or a Guarantor?

This is an important part of the application.

The official FAQ states that applications processed directly through BOI require an external guarantor or one director in the case of a limited liability company, subject to the programme's specified requirements.

Applications processed through Partner Financial Institutions may have requirements determined by the particular PFI. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Therefore, applicants should read the current requirements carefully before submitting an application.

Important: This Is NOT Free Money

Entrepreneurs should understand this clearly:

The ₦75 billion FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Fund is a loan, not a grant.

If you receive the money, you are expected to repay it according to the agreed repayment schedule.

The official portal states that repayment lasts three years and begins three months after disbursement. (FGN/BOI MSME Intervention Portal)

Before applying, calculate whether your business can comfortably service the repayment.

Beware of Fraudsters

Because government funding programmes attract scammers, entrepreneurs should be extremely careful.

Do not give your CAC documents, BVN, passwords, PINs or other sensitive information to unverified agents.

Most importantly, do not assume that someone who claims to be able to "guarantee" approval is legitimate.

Use the official FGN/BOI portal and verify any additional instructions through BOI's official channels.
