The Christmas They Never Expected
In the small, quiet village of Umuofia, the Eze family was known for their kind hearts despite their hardships. Chike and Amara, parents to three children—Ada, Ife, and little Nkem—worked tirelessly to make ends meet. Chike was a subsistence farmer, while Amara wove mats to sell at the village market. Their income barely provided for food and shelter, leaving no room for luxuries.
One evening, while the family sat around a dim lantern eating a simple meal of yam and palm oil, Nkem, their youngest, asked innocently, "Mama, will Santa come to our house this year?"
Amara's heart broke as she looked at her son. "Santa visits those who believe in love and kindness, my son," she said, forcing a smile. "And we have plenty of that in our home."
Unknown to them, Ada, the eldest child, had been secretly weaving small bracelets from scraps of thread Amara discarded. Every day after school, she took them to the market to sell. She managed to save a small amount, hoping to buy a little treat for her siblings.
When Ada returned home, she opened the package with her family gathered around. Inside were money and a note that read, "Your love for each other is the greatest gift. Use this to celebrate your bond this Christmas." Tears streamed down Amara's face as she hugged her daughter.
With the money, the Eze family bought a small chicken, some rice, and ingredients to make a feast. Amara sewed simple new clothes for the children from leftover fabric. On Christmas morning, the aroma of jollof rice filled their small home, and for the first time, the children had a meal they could call a feast. They sang carols, danced, and thanked God for the unexpected blessing.
