Topic: Introduction to Microsoft Word

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

  • Define Microsoft Word and identify its uses.

  • Recognize and explain features on the MS Word interface.

  • Type, edit, format, save and print a document.

  • Apply basic formatting tools: Bold, Italics, Alignment, Font type & size.

  • Use Page Setup to set margins and orientation.

  • Computers/laptops with Microsoft Word installed

  • Projector & Screen

  • Whiteboard/Marker

  • Sample document


3. Introduction (10 minutes)

Teacher introduces Microsoft Word as:

  • A word processing software used to type and design documents such as:

    • Letters

    • CVs

    • Reports

    • Certificates

    • Memos

    • Manuals

Learners discuss situations where Word is used in school or office.


4. Content/Presentation (60 minutes)

A. Microsoft Word Interface

Component Description
Title Bar Shows the document name
Ribbon Contains tabs like Home, Insert, Design
Quick Access Toolbar Shortcut icons (Save, Undo, Redo)
Workspace Area where typing occurs
Status Bar Shows word count, page number
Scroll Bar Moves page view up/down

B. Basic Typing Skills

  • Place cursor in document and start typing

  • Use Shift for capital letters

  • Enter to start a new paragraph

  • Space bar between words

  • Backspace/Delete for correction


C. Editing Text

Tools found on Home Tab → Font & Editing Group

  • Cut (Ctrl + X)

  • Copy (Ctrl + C)

  • Paste (Ctrl + V)

  • Undo (Ctrl + Z)

  • Redo (Ctrl + Y)

  • Find (Ctrl + F)

  • Replace (Ctrl + H)


D. Formatting Text

Formatting Tool Function
Bold (Ctrl + B) Makes text thicker
Italics (Ctrl + I) Slants text
Underline (Ctrl + U) Draws line under text
Font Size Adjusts text size
Font Color Changes text color
Alignment Left, Center, Right, Justify
Line Spacing Adjusts spacing between lines (1.0, 1.5, 2.0)

E. Page Setup

Found under Layout / Page Layout Tab

  • Margins (Normal: 1 inch)

  • Orientation (Portrait / Landscape)

  • Paper size (A4 recommended)

  • Page Borders (Design tab)


F. Saving & Printing

Task Procedure
Save File → Save As → Select folder → Name file → Save
Print File → Print → Select printer → Print

5. Teacher Activities

  • Demonstrate typing and correcting mistakes.

  • Show how to apply formatting (bold, italics, font size).

  • Display how to save and print a document.

  • Guide learners through Page Setup settings.
